The Legend of the Daltokki

According to the myth, the Lord of Heaven descended to earth disguised as a starving beggar to test the virtue of the animals. While the fox and monkey gathered fish and fruit, the rabbit, possessing only grass, threw itself into a fire to offer its own body as a meal. Moved by this profound and selfless bravery, the deity extinguished the flames and carried the rabbit up to the moon, placing it under a mystical, immortal Katsura tree. The dark shadows visible on the moon today are said to be the rabbit's silhouette from the fire.
